Literary Posters

Visual and literary arts are inextricably interconnected, and both have been fundamental influencers in my life. In choosing a passion project to pursue during this current quarantine, I decided to look back on some novels that shaped my childhood, my adolescence and the different pieces of my identity. Currently, I’ve worked through three multimedia posters inspired by influential novels, but this project is just beginning, as I continue to create not only for myself but for friends and family as an exploration of the literature that shapes us.

The ideation

Inspired by the vivid imagery from each of these stories, I decided to try my hand at a design technique I hadn’t delved into before: photo collaging. This allowed me to piece together the literary symbols in a captivating visual format.

I also hand lettered the titles to retain a hand crafted feel to the series. Each title is hand lettered to emulate the feel and thematic elements of the story. Here is an example of my process in hand lettering.


Call Me By Your Name

Aciman’s depiction of young love and vulnerability encouraged me to find confidence in my identity. I put together a mixed media poster along with a hand lettered title for this novel.


little women

Alcott’s devotion to representing a young woman with ambition in her craft made this a quintessential novel of my childhood understanding of women and all of our strength and capability. I chose key pieces of each sister’s childhood to piece together the collage, and I was inspired by Jo’s desperate writing to produce the hand lettered title.


The Metamorphosis

Kafka’s bizarre short story, bolstered my love for the macabre and grotesque, is a way to depict both the beauty and the failings of our world. The long strokes of the hand lettered title is pulled together by the disturbing composition of the story,
